Joe at work

Joe Furlong

Joe has been hunting throughout the United States and Canada with traditional archery equipment for more than forty-five years. Pursuing a desire to excel at bowhunting, he developed his own personal hunting equipment. After perfecting his craft, he formed Vintage Archery LLC to design, manufacture, and market hunting bows including Black Rhino youth archery equipment. Inspired by Dr. Ed Ashby’s broadhead reports on large game animals, Joe focused on producing a broadhead that would incorporate Dr. Ashby’s findings and theories. This was the impetus for TuffHead and MeatHead single bevel broadheads, which employed Dr. Ed Ashby theorems, and were successfully utilized by big-game hunters around the world. Joe is now retired and has transferred the ownership of his companies. However, he continues to love the sport and instills his passion for archery in his grandchildren. Joe is a Senior Member of the Pope and Young Club and a life-member of both the United Bowhunters of Illinois (UBI) and the Compton Traditional Bowhunters Organization.

Jon with a fine Kudu.

Jon Hand

Being a bowhunter and machinist from Nebraska for over 40 years, it was only a matter of time before I put the two together. Needing an adapter for carbon arrows in 2006, I started machining my own insert adapters out of necessity for glue on broad heads. They worked very well. About the same time I started reading about high FOC arrows from Dr. Ed Ashby’s intensive studies on building the ultimate hunting arrow. After meeting Dr. Ashby I knew I was on the right track and decided to share my interest in building a better arrow. I started Traditional Archery Solutions, making and selling stainless steel inserts for bowhunters. Now, I hope to help the Ashby Bowhunting Foundation with my mechanical design and machining experience.

Jeremy with an excellent bull elk

Jeremy with an excellent bull elk

Jeremy Johnson

Jeremy loves hunting the rugged mountains of the western United States. He grew up in a hunting family and was hooked on the pursuit of elk at age 15 when he killed his first 5 point Roosevelt bull on the Oregon Coast. Since that time he has made it a practice to feed his family with elk meat and his soul with the adventure that comes from chasing plus sized bull elk. In 2010 he was awarded Backcountry Outdoorsman of the year in recognition of his pursuits. He is a grateful and humble steward of the gifts and experiences God has so graciously given him. As a result he is happy to share what he's learned the hard way in hopes to help others buck the learning curve of successful bowhunting. After having trouble with failed opportunities, long recoveries and wound/losses on elk in his early days of archery hunting, he turned his focus to resolving these issues. Resolve them he did. These days big bulls that set foot in his bow range rarely leave it alive. One day in an archery shop after hunting season, he heard of several other local hunters who were struggling with the same problems he had. Jeremy resolved to do something about their struggles as well. Under the guidance and mentorship of his friends Ed Ashby and Dwight Schuh, Jeremy authored the book "Can't Lose Bowhunting" for which he was awarded Best Outdoor Book of the Year in 2017. His book started as a means to help his fellow bowhunters prevent wounding and losing the animals they hunted. By the time the project was finished it grew into a guide for ensuring consistent bowhunting success. Jeremy hopes to improve others lives and enjoyment of others as well as prevent the unnecessary loss of game. In this way, his goals align with those of the Ashby Foundation, so joining the team and supporting their efforts is one more way to fulfill his mission.

Thom with his Asiatic Buffalo

Thom Jorgensen

Thom began applying the knowledge he gained from Dr Ashby’s papers in the construction of his hunting arrows over a decade ago. Since then he has been taking game across the USA and around the world using arrows conforming to “The Ultimate Hunting Arrow” principles. In addition to providing formal training classes and informal mentoring to fellow bowhunters, he has also worked with companies on product and process improvements to aid in the building more lethal arrow systems.

Cobus Pretorius

Cobus is a Big 5 dangerous game guide based in South-Africa, who has specialized in Bowhunting since 1995. Cobus has been hunting with a bow for the last 19 years and the last 4 years he has been part of the PSE family. He understands what bowhunting is all about and one of the ways that you can add success to all of the variables is by making sure that your equipment and setup is 100%. He takes many hunters on dangerous game hunts every year, primary for Cape Buffalo. Since this is a very specialized type of bow hunt, everything needs to be just right, keeping the hunter as a whole in mind with their entire setup, limitations and strengths. Cobus understands that applying the Ashby principles to fit these different bowhunters with arrow and broadhead systems to ethically harvest game is part of that overall preparation.

Jim Aken with his X-Bow Hippo

David Neils and his dog Autumn, looking for lion tracks.

Jim Aken

Jim got his first bow, a Bois D’Arc (Osage Orange) longbow when he was eight years old that he used to shoot wood arrows into hay bales. He ultimately acquired a solid fiberglass fishing arrow and a reel that he taped onto his brother’s bow with electrical tape and graduated to bow fishing.  Later in life, while preparing for a Cape Buffalo hunt, Jim came across Dr. Ashby’s studies and successfully constructed arrows with ultra-high FOC. During sixteen trips to Africa, Jim’s arrow/broadhead system obtained a complete pass through on the first Hippo ever registered with SCI in the crossbow category. Jim has also taken countless animals with his set up, inclusive of multiple Cape Buffalo, Eland and other large game across Africa and North America. Jim is a noted cross-bow authority and authored the book titled “Its All About the Arrows! Engineering Arrows for Enhanced Hunting Performance.” You can get your book directly from Jim by emailing him at Jim_aken@hotmail.com.

David Neils

David grew up in Libby, Montana, surrounded by wild country with all three apex predators, grizzlies, wolves and mountain lions. He started bowhunting in 1976 with a PSE compound. He practiced on small game for four years before drawing an arrow on a muley buck along the Big Thompson river. A successful hunt, the buck only made it twenty yards. He was hooked. Most of his bowhunting since has focused on elk hunting in Colorado. He prefers wild public land with difficult access and miles from where he parks his vehicle.

The last twenty years have been spent studying and filming mountain lions in some of the wildest country of Colorado and Montana. He developed a system, using four natural factors, which allows him to pinpoint mountain lion activity throughout the United States, Canada and Chile. He enjoys sharing this knowledge and supporting others to study this magnificent apex predator through a deep dive mountain lion workshop.

His passion to help ABF lies in Website development and updates, bowhunter education and engagement in conservation efforts, and leveraging his expertise in wildlife conservation, education and research. Visit www.wildnaturemedia.com
