  • Rob Neilson with Cape Buffalo in Zambia

    Advisor - Joe Furlong

Joe has been hunting throughout the United States and Canada with traditional archery equipment for more than forty-five years. Inspired by Dr. Ed Ashby’s broadhead reports on large game animals, Joe focused on producing a broadhead that would incorporate Dr. Ashby’s findings and theories. This was the impetus for TuffHead and MeatHead single bevel broadheads, which employed Dr. Ed Ashby theorems, and were successfully utilized by big-game hunters around the world. Joe is now retired and continues to love the sport and instills his passion for archery in his grandchildren. Joe is a Senior Member of the Pope and Young Club and a life-member of both the United Bowhunters of Illinois (UBI) and the Compton Traditional Bowhunters Organization.

  • Advisor - Jon Hand

Being a bowhunter and machinist from Nebraska for over 40 years, it was only a matter of time before I put the two together. Needing an adapter for carbon arrows in 2006, I started machining my own insert adapters out of necessity for glue on broad heads. They worked very well. About the same time I started reading about high FOC arrows from Dr. Ed Ashby’s intensive studies on building the ultimate hunting arrow. After meeting Dr. Ashby I knew I was on the right track and decided to share my interest in building a better arrow. I started Traditional Archery Solutions, making and selling stainless steel inserts for bowhunters. Now, I hope to help the Ashby Bowhunting Foundation with my mechanical design and machining experience.

Troy is a registered respiratory therapist, has three great kids and a very understanding wife.

  • Advisor - Cobus Pretorius

Cobus is a Big 5 dangerous game guide based in South-Africa, who has specialized in Bowhunting since 1995. Cobus has been hunting with a bow for the last 19 years and the last 4 years he has been part of the PSE family. He understands what bowhunting is all about and one of the ways that you can add success to all of the variables is by making sure that your equipment and setup is 100%. He takes many hunters on dangerous game hunts every year, primary for Cape Buffalo. Since this is a very specialized type of bow hunt, everything needs to be just right, keeping the hunter as a whole in mind with their entire setup, limitations and strengths. Cobus understands that applying the Ashby principles to fit these different bowhunters with arrow and broadhead systems to ethically harvest game is part of that overall preparation.

  • Advisor - Jim Aken

Jim got his first bow, a Bois D’Arc (Osage Orange) longbow when he was eight years old that he used to shoot wood arrows into hay bales. He ultimately acquired a solid fiberglass fishing arrow and a reel that he taped onto his brother’s bow with electrical tape and graduated to bow fishing.  Later in life, while preparing for a Cape Buffalo hunt, Jim came across Dr. Ashby’s studies and successfully constructed arrows with ultra-high FOC. During sixteen trips to Africa, Jim’s arrow/broadhead system obtained a complete pass through on the first Hippo ever registered with SCI in the crossbow category. Jim has also taken countless animals with his set up, inclusive of multiple Cape Buffalo, Eland and other large game across Africa and North America. Jim is a noted cross-bow authority and authored the book titled “Its All About the Arrows! Engineering Arrows for Enhanced Hunting Performance.” You can get your book directly from Jim by emailing him at Jim_aken@hotmail.com.
